Abstract
QIṢĀṢ is one of the most salient concepts that shaped the discourse of the Arab Spring in Egypt. The concept owes much of its strength, including the capacity to dominate and shape political discourse and its illocutionary power in the dispute over justice and political power, to the fact that it is strongly embedded in the Islamic tradition. Yet, the manner, in which the Islamic normative discourse and the lay public discussion treat QIṢĀṢ is not identical. In this article we provide a contrastive semantic analysis of QIṢĀṢ in texts produced by experts in Islamic jurisprudence and lay political discourse. Examining the manner, in which Islamic normative concepts function in lay discourses, may provide us with some insight into how elements of religious knowledge are encoded in language and how they affect the actual behavioral codes.
