Abstract

The article deals with the outlining of the social dimension of the Islamic religious teaching in the context of the modern transformations in the world. In order to uncover Islam’s scale functionality in society, the authors analyses its various claims at the regulation of social order. First of all, this includes the verses of the Quran that are specifically devoted to executing a form of social control over gender issues, other religions and, particularly, punishments for criminal and moral offences. Second of all, the article sheds more light on the significance of Islam’s heavy reliance on the promulgation of social justice in various spheres. It is argued that the idea of justice serves as a cornerstone of Islamic daʻwa which has gained an utmost significance in the context of the post-colonial world order. In this light the author comes to the conclusion that Islam’s inherent social functionality, starting from the conditions of its origins and up to the formation of the sharia as religious law, has contributed to the transformation of Islamic religious teaching into an ideological platform for various political movements and groups.
