THE INDIAN OF THE EUROPEAN LITERARY ROMANTICISM

Abstract
The purpose of this imagological paper is to present specific and similar features of the English, French, German, Russian literary versions of the Romanticized Indian. Sir William Jones’ “Hindu Hymns”, Robert Southey’s “The Curse of Kehama”, Thomas Moore’s “Lalla Rookh”, Thomas Medwin’s “Oswald and Edwin: An Oriental Sketch”, “Angler in Wales, or Days and Nights of Sportsmen”, Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s “Pariah”, Heinrich Heine’s “Frederica”, Casimir Delavigne’s “Pariah”, F. Schall’s “The Bride of Benares…”, Leconte de Lisle’s “Surya”, “Bhagavat”, “The Bow of Shiva”, “The Vision of Brahma”, Vasily Zhukovsky’s “Lalla Rookh”, “Nal and Damayanti”, Mikhail Lermontov’s “The Angel of Death”, Afanasy Fet’s “Sacontala”, Yakov Polonsky’s “The Bathers”, “Fakir” are the main objects of this research. There have been analyzed the following major components of the Romanticized Indian’s geocultural imago: a) geographical and natural (India, Ganges, tiger); b) mythological (Hindu deities); c) religious and ritual (sati or suttee); d) social (Brahman, pariah); e) architectural (Hindu temple or pagoda); f) literary (Sacontala).
