Abstract

The Author of the paper is offering his own reconstruction of events, which happened in the Eastern Mediterranean during several years after official end of the Third Syrian War (the war between the king of Hellenistic Egypt – Ptolemy III Euergetes and the master of Seleukids state – Seleukos II Kallinikos during 246–241 BC). Firstly, an offered reconstruction is based on the evidences of “Chronographia” written by Eusebios from Caesarea and “Breviarium of Roman history from the foundation of the City” of Flavius Eutropius (Euseb. I, 251; Eutrop. III, 1, 1). Together with the information from works of Justinus, Polyaenus and Polybios, the abovementioned evidences specify quite long and painful fading of the military conflict between Ptolemies and Seleukids states. This process had continued during 241/240 – 237 BC; besides, it was happening on the background of the so-called Fratricidal War between Seleukos Kallinikos and his younger brother Antiochos Hierax. Particularly, after first successes in war against his brother, Seleukos had undertaken an unsuccessful attempt to return Ephesos, which belonged to Ptolemies according to the peace treaty of 241 BC. Then Ptolemy Euergetes gave a military help to Antiochos Hierax, with whom he was staying de jure in a condition of war before that. As a result, Kallinikos was compelled to make some territorial concessions to Egypt, in order to persuade Ptolemy III to break his allied relationship with Hierax. Thus, Seleukid king resigned Damascus and, probably, Orthosia that were his consolation prize gained immediately after the Third Syrian War. Besides, Seleukos II had unilaterally sent his father to Alexandria.
