Abstract

The article is devoted to important regional integration project – the project of the East Asian Community. The subject of the study includes the views of Japanese politicians and intellectuals on the future shape of the community and China’s place in it. The first part deals with the background to the project, including the revival of Pan-Asian ideas in Japan in the second half of the XXth century. The second part deals with the main stages of implementation of the project of the East Asian Community, since 1990 (the project of the East Asian Economic Group) to the final report of the Second East Asian Vision Group in 2012, while special attention is paid to how the project is displayed in official international documents. The third part analyzes the Japanese versions of the project of the East Asian Community, with special attention paid to the concepts of Prime Ministers Koizumi Junichiro and Hatoyama Yukio. Finally, in the fourth part of the article there is an analysis of the views of Japanese intellectuals on the place and the role of China in the future East Asian Community and in its development.
