ISIL AS A HYBRID NETWORKED ORGANIZATION: HISTORY, IDEOLOGY AND INFORMATION STRATEGY

Abstract
Terrorist organizations today use the Internet and social-network media to create the effects they desire through a series of on-line activities. The article analyzes ISIL (also known as Islamic State, ISIS, Daesh) as a terrorist network organization. It presents history, administrative organization and information facilities of ISIL. This article looks at how ISIL uses media strategically as part of its armed activities in Syria and Iraq. These activities include information collection (intelligence), target selection, propaganda, recruitment and fundraising. This essay demonstrates that ISIL utilizes a decentralized model of propaganda through social media platforms effectively, thus producing an extensive, highly fluid stream of information all over the Internet. ISIL’s target audience is global, and includes not only Arabic speakers with Jihadist aspirations but anyone who has Internet access. This paper also examines the ideology and main narrative of the ISIL organization.
