Abstract

This article examines the processes of changes that acquire the State of Israel after the 1988 Knesset elections. The religious parties had always been significant participants in the electoral process. Thereafter, attention is concentrated on the factors that account the influences that affect religious-poli-tical conflicts in Israel. Then, the focus is on the Jewish religious political parties that participated in the democratic political process and influenced political strategies. Their regular participation in the electoral process and access to government resources also worked to moderate initially hardline party positions. They also typically serve as pivotal parties in Israeli gover-ning coalition’s accounts. The Jewish ethnic democracy was the key component that helped to cooperate with the secular and religious political lobby. As a result of the integration of religious political parties into Israel’s proportional representation, they play a key role in the formation of governing coalitions with the larger secular parties. Evidence from the 1988 Knesset elections in Israel demonstrates that both forms of religious involvement improved support for ostensibly secular parties in the right-wing bloc and Israel’s religious parties.
