Abstract

The article deals with the basic cases of tonal alternations in Mandarin and gives a general overview of the anticipatory and carry-over F0 effects that are typical for the language. The importance of isolated and contextual realization of tones is discussed along with a short review of results of previous experimental researches in the field. Main focus among different tonal changes lies on sandhi and its types in Mandarin. It is described along with other types of formal variations, such as coarticulation and neutralization.
