WESTERN NEPAL: THE PROBLEM OF INCORPORATION AND STATUS OF THE VASSAL STATES (LATE XVIII – EARLY XIX CENTURY)

Abstract
The article is devoted to the process and peculiarities of incorporation of the Himalayan kingdoms of Western Nepal into the unified kingdom of Nepal (the end of XVIII – the beginning of XIX century) taking the principality of Lo (Mustang) as an example. Social and political situation in the kingdom as well as the system of relations between the king of Nepal and the king of Mustang is being analyzed according to the documents. The aspects similar to some other vassal states & Mustang are being compared and studied. The article also investigates the socio-political system of the state formations dependent to Mustangi raja “tributary kingdoms”. Special attention is paid to the socio-cultural aspect of development of the kingdom of Mustang during this period.
