Abstract

This article is devoted to the problem of definition of a Chinese character. Already existed definitions from different scholar sources are presented at the beginning of the article to discuss their disadvantages or contradictions. Then a group of terms, connected with the character and often used to determine the latter – ideogram, logogram, pictogram, grapheme, determinative and phonetic, is analyzed. The article also discusses a problem of accordance between a character as a unit of writing and a unit of sound language, it is stated, that the former coordinates with a morpheme in contemporary Chinese language. A new definition of a character is formulated at the end of the article.
