Abstract

The article deals with Agathangel Krymskyi’s works (1871–1942) dedicated to the Cairo University al-Azhar and published during the period of 30 years. Acad. Krymskyi became interested in the development of education in the Arabic East during his stay in Beirut (1896–1898). In his research work Agathangel Krymskyi states that favorable conditions for the development of schools existed in Muslim world for a long time, as their main task was to teach children to read the Quran and necessary prayers. Schools were built around mosques. The mosque Azhar, built in Cairo in 972, was named after Fatima (“zahra”). The oldest Muslim university at al-Azhar mosque became scholar and literature centre in 988. Arabic philology and theological law (fikh) were taught there. Its students were from different parts of Muslim world. Now this university teaches tens of thousands of students from different countries at its 30 departments.
