Abstract

The article seeks to find out and investigate the role of religious parties in the political structure of the State of Israel that was determined by the features of its electoral system. The author has marked the importance of the secular part of the government, on which the formation of coalition depends, as well as the features of the relationship between religious parties and the ruling blocs. The article deals with the policy of concessions to the religious parties during 1948−1977 that was designed to obtain their support in internal and foreign policy of the ruling party and to use religion as a tool in the political struggle. The article contains and outlines the three most influential parties among the representatives of the religious part of the government and mentions some smaller political players who had more radical religious positions. In particular, the issue of the social base of the parties and their electorate is highlighted, and causes of hardly variable number of votes that were given for them in elections. An opinion is expressed on how the Likud bloc’s rise to power could affect the socio-religious relations in the government.
