Abstract

The ethnonyms “Sogdians” / “Sugds” are found in some medieval hagiographic texts dedicated to the life and activity of Saint apostle Andrew in the Eastern Black Sea region. Foremost, these are the works by Pseudo-Sophronius (after the 4th century AD) and Epiphanius the Monk (the late 8th – early 9th centuries AD). The translator and researcher of these hagiographic texts V. G. Vasilievskiy considered that the mentioned ethnic names were the fiction. A. W. Gadlo believed that the holders of the ethnonyms “Sogdians” / “Sugds” were of Adyghian origin. However we can consider that the “Sogdians” of Pseudo-Sophronius and the “Sugds” of Epiphanius the Monk mentioned as inhabitants of the Western Caucasus were the Iranophone Sogdian merchants from Central Asia. Based on the archaeological data, A. A. Ierusalimskaya proved that in the Early Medieval period the Northern branch of the Great Silk Road passed through the Northern and Western Caucasus. As a result, many Sogdian merchants moved with their silk from Sogd to the Eastern Black Sea coast, where the Byzantine borders started.
