Анотація
Питання контролю над землями, що вважалися святими, становило прецедент для одного з найважливіших конфліктів визначних політичних гравців 19 ст. Як відомо, Росія не лише порівняла Османську імперію з важко хворою людиною Європи, але й запропонувала поділити її землі поміж великих європейських держав. Однак Франція та Великобританія на цю пропозицію не пристали. Така політична атмосфера створила передумови для початку Кримської війни, у якій Англія, Франція та Османська імперія виступили єдиною антиросійською коаліцією. Протягом трьох років війни Британія, Франція та Османська імперія, що вперше воювали на одному боці, набули відмінного політичного та соціального досвіду. Традиційно сприймана Європою як “інакший” в сенсі протистояння “Схід–Захід”, Османська імперія вперше розглядалася Західною Європою як союзник та повноправний суб’єкт. З іншого боку, частина османського суспільства почала визнавати Захід, тоді як для інших він усе ще лишався “підступними невірними”. Зміни у свідомості обох цивілізацій, що встановили та налагодили між собою прямі стосунки протягом Кримської війни, добре проілюстровані на шпальтах тогочасних джерел масової інформації. Стаття покликана дослідити Кримську війну за матеріалами центральних британських, французьких та американських газет: The Times, The Manchester Guardian, The Observer, Journal des Débats, La Presse, New York Daily Times, New York Daily Tribune, Hartford Daily Courant.
