Анотація
Християнізація Індії набула широкого висвітлення в дослідницькій літературі, проте у нашій статті робиться спроба докладніше розглянути один із її аспектів, а саме освітній. Окресливши загальні закономірності розвитку місіонерської освіти у ХІХ ст., автор з’ясовує його особливості у північно-індійських провінціях та культурно-історичний контекст, який їх породив, а саме: нижчий рівень освіченості місцевого населення, більш сильні позиції індуїзму в регіоні та поширені уявлення про “християнську загрозу”. У школах західного зразка поруч з англійською викладалися класичні мови (санскрит і перська), а також гінді та урду, англійська рідко слугувала в якості мови викладання. Для вищих прошарків суспільства така освіта ставала сходинкою до університету, а в подальшому – до місця в колоніальному апараті, в результаті чого прозелітична функція місіонерських шкіл у північно-індійських провінціях була маргіналізована значно більше, ніж на інших територіях.
