Abstract

The post-war era of the formation of the new independent states of the Asian continent was a time of rapid growth of the political influence of the young post-colonial powers, which are increasingly headed by women politicians. The leader of the democratic opposition in Burma / Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi, as well as all of hers wellknown and not so well-known colleagues (Indira Gandhi, Benazir Bhutto, Megavati Sukarnoputri, Corazon Aquino et al.), became the head of her country, because she was a relative of the outstanding national leader – General Aung San – and on this basis received from the people the political credit to fight with the people’s rivals in the local elite. The condition for the victory of Suu Kyi in this confrontation was the amazing ability of the leader of the Myanmar opposition to use the traditional ideas of the country and their representations in the political struggle, and an ability to find a common language with the influential local and international elites.
