Анотація

У статті йдеться про сформований в Індії у другій пол. ХІХ ст. новий соціальний прошарок, який у науковій літературі називають “вестернізовані освічені еліти”, “інтелігенція”, “інтелектуали”, “новий середній клас”, та теоретичні проблеми, пов’язані з ним. До таких належать проблеми критерію виділення нової соціальної групи, її місця в існуючій соціальній структурі та ролі, яку вона відіграє в індійському націєтворенні. Було з’ясовано, що головними критеріями виокремлення прошарку є західна освіченість та особлива ідентичність, яка формується на протиставленні себе колишній могольській та індійській аристократії, традиційно освіченій частині індійського суспільства та нижчим його прошаркам. В утворенні групи кастовий, етнічний та релігійний принципи не грають вирішальної ролі, що обумовлює її особливе місце в існуючій соціальній структурі. Насамкінець саме “вестернізовані освічені еліти” стали в авангарді індійського націєтворення.
