Abstract

On the basis of some sources and researches the article discusses the changes and improvement that occurred in the protective armor of Mongolian warriors and their horses. The author specifies the composition of the Mongolian protective armor of the 13th – the second half of the 14th century, which included armors, helmets, shields, vambraces and greaves. In addition, the heavy cavalry soldiers had chainmail or leather armor, and their headgear was composed of a light leather helmet with durable nape protector. The reasons of changes in armor manufacturing, features of the materials used, as well as improvement of their barrier properties (quality, durability and weight reduction) are also covered by the author. It is indicated that Mongolian nobility and best warriors paid great attention to the protection of their horses. Mongols used shells (leather or iron) and head guards (masks or guises) as a protective armor for them. Shell, which covered horse’s body like a dense veil, is also described in the article. It was produced from rough, solid leather and trimmed with metal plates. Armament of light and heavy cavalry warriors in conjunction with their protective armor and professional skill made it possible to achieve victory over a strong opponent.
